Crazy paving marble
Irregularly shaped stones rounded by tumbling make up the Crazy paving SENINI STONE. Irregular marble pieces softened by tumbling: a perfect combination of beauty and functionality, of rigour and creativity, the ideal choice to transform projects into a unique and inimitable experience.
SENINI’S PALLADIANA IS BULKED: after the marble is broken into many small, shapeless and irregular pieces, but with a sharp edge, these undergo the process of tumbling (mechanical antiquing of the marble), which rounds off the edges and wears them down, making them as soft as river stones. The name Crazy paving derives from the architect Palladio, who used to use this laying technique in his constructions. SENINI STONE, thanks to the wide range of materials used, has the possibility to offer Crazy paving in different marbles, from white-beige to coloured tones.
Origins and characteristics of Crazy paving marble
Crazy paving marble has its origins in the opus incertum technique, i.e. the typical paving made of stones of different and irregular cuts used by the ancient Romans: random irregular stone paving. In this case too, pieces of stone are used and placed side by side without geometric rigour or uniformity in size. Its value derives both from the material that is used and from its installation carried out by specialised professional installers, which is why the use of marble Crazy paving makes it possible to obtain a pavement of great value and aesthetic appeal.
This type of flooring made of irregularly arranged fragments of natural stone, marble or travertine is so called because it is common in Palladio’s works. The Crazy paving floor immediately evokes the timeless charm of grand stately homes, thus representing a fundamental element of Italian architectural history.
Crazy paving Tumbled OPUS INCERTUM SENINI STONE is the continuous natural stone flooring that adds value to any outdoor or indoor project. Flexible, customisable and in harmony with any context, Crazy paving SENINI STONE is the ideal solution for paving the poolside, terrace, pedestrian walkway or driveway entrance, but also for interior design spaces and wellness areas. Paving with rounded shapeless pieces is often called ‘irregular mosaic’.
Applications and versatility of Crazy paving marble
Crazy paving (or opus incertum floor) is an ideal type of flooring for both interior and exterior use. Its small and irregular format makes it suitable for all types of curves, and when glued on a suitable screed it can be driveable. Examples are its use to embellish a driveway entrance or undulating walkway, porches and terraces in precious Art Nouveau style. Crazy paving, precisely because of its ability to harmoniously follow different slopes, is often used to cover the floor of a new shower tray in an existing bathroom in place of a previous bathtub, or to tie different floors together following the demolition of partitions or door openings in walls.
The company SENINI STONE, which produces and sells marble and travertine floor and wall tiles, has specialised for many years in the production of Tumbles Crazy paving in Marble, Travertine and Natural Stones Made in Italy. Standard Crazy paving, whether in Bardiglio, Biancone, Botticino, Carrara, Nero Marquinia, Rosa Perlino, Rosso Asiago Verona, Breccia Sarda Tigrato, Travertino Romano Classico or Etrusco or Noce, is 10mm thickness, supplied loose in bags of about 1 sqm each.
TUMBLED CRAZY PAVING STANDARD THICKNESS 10MM
Crazy paving flooring is composed of slivers of fine marble approximately 1-15 centimetres, irregularly crushed and tumbled pieces that are supplied loose to be laid on a cement base. A variable joint remains between one fragment and the next, which is filled with suitable cement grout. The material is calibrated in 10 mm thickness and the edges are rounded by tumbling, which simulates the rolling of pebbles in the river bed, softening the edges and giving the surface an even more natural appearance. Crazy paving is both a flooring and wall tile marble to be laid with a suitable adhesive on a suitable laying surface, to be treated as desired to brighten its colour and/or for water and oil repellent protection.
For its value and aesthetic yield, Crazy paving flooring has been widely used over the years to decorate the most prestigious dwellings, and still today it is a solution of great visual impact that confers the class and elegance that only marble can give. Crazy paving is a floor tile technique very similar to Venetian paving in which the stones laid instead of in the form of flakes are in rounded marble shapings. It is currently used to decorate outdoor environments such as swimming pools or solariums, the cement grout is non-slip and the marble hardly heats up under the sun in the summer months, giving a pleasant contact.
Crazy paving 20mm or 30mm thickness
SENINI STONE, specialised in natural stone floor and wall tiles, in addition to the standard Crazy paving marble 10mm thickness, offers upon request and depending on the availability of raw material, reclaimed or cut Crazy paving large 20 or 30 mm thickness. Crazy paving flooring is composed of stone pieces of fine marble approximately 5-25 cm (approximately 2-10 inches), irregular pieces, usually from the rough, crushed and tumbled surface, which are supplied loose for laying on site. Crazy paving with greater thicknesses is usually supplied by the quintal, loose in big bags on pallets of about 7 or 8 quintals.
ECO-FRIENDLY SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS
Marble Palladium is used as a finishing material, a decorative element produced by external construction in visible contact in our daily environments.
Recent studies by the WHO on indoor air pollution in buildings have revealed how much higher it can be than outdoor air pollution, due to a poor choice of finishing materials, because of their toxicity. The ideal would be to choose eco-friendly BIO ECOLOGICAL MATERIALS free of potentially toxic chemical treatments and recyclable. Stone is a natural material, BIO par excellence. These are therefore important choices, also from the point of view of our health, for man who lives and breathes in homes (and confined environments in general).
The choice of a sustainable material such as stone brings not only beauty, value and durability, but also health qualities to the environment in which we live and consequently quality to our lives.
100% NATURAL material
SENINI STONE Crazy paving being made of natural stone, whether marble, travertine, sedimentary rock, stone, is a 100% NATURAL material. It can be called a ‘living’ material because it comes from the life of our planet. It is extracted from nature (whether from mountain, plain or underground quarries), the extracted blocks are cut and processed with water and mechanical means without the use of chemical or toxic products, the processing enhances the characteristics of the chosen stone without being polluted, so the finished product is 100% natural. Moreover, in the processing of this precious material, nothing is thrown away, nothing goes to waste: the resulting pieces are reprocessed to produce the fascinating product that is Crazy paving – opus incertum.
Natural stone has a soul, a history, which is told in its veining, in its stratifications. Stone breathes. Stone transmits positive energy. Stone is as unique as each one of us is unique.
